Shirodhara is a therapeutic Ayurvedic procedure in which warm oil or other liquids are continuously poured onto the forehead (the “third eye” location). “Shiro” is Japanese for head, and “dhara” is Sanskrit for flow. The client lies on a massage table during a shirodhara session, and a specially made pot is filled with warm custamisedy herbal oil which is suspended above their forehead.
Targeting the region between the eyebrows, the oil is heated to a comfortable temperature before being applied to the forehead in a gentle, continuous stream. A peaceful and tranquil sensation is produced as the stream of oil is directed regularly and slowly, enabling it to flow over the forehead and through the hair. In order to promote relaxation, the therapist may additionally massage the scalp or other parts of the body.
Shirodhara is renowned for the profoundly calming and revitalising benefits it has on the body and soul. Stress, worry, sleeplessness, migraines, depression, Anxiety and mental exhaustion can all be relieved by it. Warm oil is applied continuously to the forehead in an effort to balance
the three doshas (vata, pitta, and kapha) and foster tranquilly and clarity.
In addition to oil, additional substances can be used in shirodhara, depending on the patient’s needs and the specific objectives of the treatment, such as herbal decoctions, medicated milk, buttermilk, or even water. It is advised to receive shirodhara from a certified Ayurvedic practitioner or therapist who has been trained in the method because it is a distinct and specialised therapy. They’ll be able to evaluate your unique requirements, choose the proper oil or liquid, and customise the treatment for your unique constitution and condition.
